Assistant Pastor of Youth and Evangelism

Position Summary:  The position profile is for a person who would be "all in" with Community West's evangelistic mission, ministry philosophy and theological orientation.  This person would be value-added to the entire congregation and a complement to the Lead Pastor and other staff.  This person would have sufficient ministry experience to be load-bearing in multiple areas of ministry from day-one, freeing the Lead Pastor from some of his programming, administrative and supervisory responsibilities.  This person's specific responsibilities would be in the areas of youth, evangelism and missional engagement, and general pastoral responsibilities, including preaching and teaching.  This person's heart and gifting would be inclined toward evangelism, mission, and the unchurched.  He or she would also love being with students and have demonstrated ability in developing church ministries.  Ideally, this person would give informal leadership to our young adult community.

  • Is “all in” with Community West’s ministry philosophy, evangelistic mission and theological orientation.

  • Loves middle and high schoolers.

  • Loves spending time with the unchurched. 

  • Is a capable Bible teacher and preacher and looks to provide spiritual leadership.  

  • Understands and embraces our denominational context (The Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians) and is comfortable theologically in the Reformed evangelical tradition.

  • Understands and embraces the “all-hands-on-deck” ethos of a young church.

  • Values and contributes to a healthy unified staff culture. 

  • Remains teachable and humble.

  • Has the orientation to build the ministry and mission of the church through volunteers.

  • Demonstrates a growing grasp of God’s grace, and engages in spiritual disciplines, including prayer and Bible study.

  • Is willing to submit to the authority and vision of the Lead Pastor and the elders.

Overview of Job Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Youth Development and Leadership – Envisions and directs the building of the youth ministry through the volunteers, students and congregation. 

  • Evangelism – Directs evangelistic culture-making and programming to prepare and engage our congregation in loving their unchurched friends, neighbors and co-workers and sharing their faith with them. 

  • Mission and Missional Engagement – Leads our congregation in the value and practice of mission, as it is changing in today’s world, and also in loving and serving the people where God has them.

  • Sunday Service Planning and Implementation – Serves on a creative team responsible for planning and implementing Sunday worship services.  Primarily responsible for recruiting, equipping and supporting service liturgists.

  • Preaching and Teaching – Preaches and teaches regularly.

  • General Pastoral Responsibilities - Joins the Lead Pastor and other staff in providing pastoral and congregational care, and in officiating weddings and funerals. Also, serves to strengthen the infrastructure and develop the administrative processes of our church.

  •  ECO Leadership - Is an active participant in our ECO presbytery.

  • Discipleship and Equipping – Is an effective shepherd of lives.  Builds volunteer teams in areas of primary ministry responsibility, effectively equipping volunteers for mission and ministry.

  • Vision-casting – In ministry settings, vision-casts the overall aims and purposes of Community West.

  • Networking – Builds relationships with other community leaders in the region (secular and ministry).

  • Administration – Possesses strong organizational skills, is dependable and good with follow-through.

  • Personal Evangelism – Builds friendships with those who are not following Jesus, inviting them to get involved in our church and looking for opportunities to share your hope of Christ.

  • Child and Youth Safety Protocols – Is careful to ensure ECO’s protocols are observed and followed.
    Supervisor: 
    Responsible to the Lead Pastor. 

    Will receive annual reviews and quarterly status reports, plus real-time feedback and development.

    Compensation:

    Compensation is commensurate with the person’s gifts, ministry experience, and also the church and West Richmond context.   

    Education, Experience and Credentialing:

  • A minimum of 6 years of church or ministry experience is required.

  • A Masters of Divinity degree is preferred.

  • Ordination in ECO or a denomination where ordination is easily transferable.
