Director of Music and Worship

Position Vision and Purpose:

At Community West Church, music ministry is a vital part of the worship service in our weekly Sunday services. The primary role of our Director of Music and Worship is to implement a refreshing, visionary music ministry program grounded in the truths of who God is. We are seeking someone to elevate those truths through Scripture, psalms, contemporary songs, traditional hymns, original compositions, antiphons, spirituals, and gospel selections, using worship bands, choirs and other arrangements and approaches. For many of the people we are trying to reach and serve, music represents a heart language that connects them to God and his grace in a way the spoken word may not.

Personal Qualities Required of Applicants

  • Is “all in” with Community West’s ministry philosophy, evangelistic mission and our orientation to worship.

  • Is a worshipper at heart.

  • Demonstrates strong worship leadership skills, with significant experience in quality setting(s).

  • Is committed to the ministry of the local church.

  • Possesses strong vocal skills and the ability to play at least one instrument.

  • Understands and embraces our denominational context (The Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians) and is comfortable theologically in the Reformed evangelical tradition.

  • Understands and embraces the “all-hands-on-deck” ethos of a young church.

  • Values and contributes to a healthy unified staff culture.

  • Demonstrates a growing grasp of God’s grace, and engages in spiritual disciplines, including prayer and Bible study.

  • Is willing to submit to the authority of the Lead Pastor and the elders.

    Overview of Job Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Volunteer Recruiting – Builds volunteer teams by proactively getting to know the church community, discerning where volunteers are called to serve, and inviting them into the ministry.

  • Song Selection – Thoughtfully selects and arranges songs and hymns that serve the purposes of worship, in consultation with the Lead Pastor.

  • Service Crafting – Takes a leadership role in crafting all elements of worship services.  Serve as a vital participant on a worship service planning team.

  • Rehearsal Leadership – Plans and directs weekly music rehearsals.

  • Sunday Services – Leads Sunday morning worship services musically and spiritually by engaging the congregation through personal demeanor and spoken exhortation and encouragement.

  • Audio Visual and Technology – Responsible for the effective use of technology in the sanctuary, including recruiting and supporting volunteers in the technology booth.

  • Special Services – Provides musical leadership for special services, such as Christmas Eve, Holy Week, weddings and funerals.

  • Children and Youth – Works collaboratively with directors of ministries to children and youth to engage these age groups in music ministries.

  • Creative Arts – Helps catalyze an expanding creative arts ministry at Community West.

  • Discipleship and Equipping – Develops meaningful relationships with volunteers that contribute to their personal growth and development, both spiritually and musically.

  • Vision-casting – At music rehearsals and in other settings with volunteers, vision-casts the overall aims and purposes of Community West.

  • Networking – Builds relationships with other musicians and worship leaders in the region for connection, support, and idea sharing.

  • Administration – Possesses strong organizational skills, is dependable and good with follow-through.

  • Personal Evangelism – Builds friendships with those who are not following Jesus, inviting them to get involved in our church and looking for opportunities to share your hope of Christ.

Job Details:

Compensation: This is a full-time position. Compensation is commensurate with the person’s gifts, ministry experience, and also the church and West Richmond context.  

Supervisor: Responsible to the Lead Pastor.  Will participate in quarterly and annual reviews and receive real-time feedback and development.
